ThetaStateOfMind, a world of ZEEEDZ

Drift out of your mind, into yourself.

An artistic research practice. Surrealist method, the body's own slowing, and what the hand makes once the thinking mind stops steering. Open research, not a service.

Drag towards theta and watch the water settle.

A picture of a feeling, not a brain scan. With sound on (a one-hour session), a soft theta tone follows the slider; research on whether such tones change brainwaves is mixed.

Manifesto

Seven lines for the inner explorer.

ThetaStateOfMind is the world of ZEEEDZ that turns inward: the subconscious, the nervous system and the states between, worked through surrealist art.

  1. Slow is a way of seeing.
  2. The image arrives before the word.
  3. Make first. Understand later.
  4. Nothing on the page is a mistake.
  5. The edge of sleep is a studio.
  6. The body gets there before the mind agrees.
  7. Drift out of your mind, into yourself.

Three instruments

Hand, sound and gathering.

The Surrealists did not make methods, they made instruments: devices that get past the critical mind faster than it can object. These are the three this practice works with. Each is under test, not on offer.

I

Make below thinking

The hand: images that arrive before words, cut, painted and drawn without a plan.

  • Painting
  • Intuitive collage
  • Looping line drawing
  • Mixed media

II

Listen your way down

Sound: slow, warm tones and long exhalations, the oldest lever anyone has on their own arousal. Live in a room, or here on the page.

III

Drift together

Gathering: alone in your own state, together in one room. A nervous system settles faster next to other settled ones.

  • The Exquisite Corpse Dinner Study 03
  • Intuitive collage workshops Held 2020
Why a room matters

The second inheritance

Surrealism forgot the body.

Breton went below thinking through the mind. A century later we know the shorter route runs through the body: breath, hand, rhythm, and the presence of other people. That is the half this practice adds, and the reason the research exists.

If the state comes first, what does the room have to be made of?

State before image

Slow out-breaths, repetitive hand movement and low warm sound all lower arousal. They are not relaxation extras; they are the condition the image needs.

Instrument II and III · Studies 01, 04

Safety is a material

Nobody plays while bracing. A room where you cannot be judged does more for what gets made than any prompt. Co-regulation is part of the medium, not the hospitality.

Instrument III · Studies 01, 03

Making before explaining

Most creative spaces ask you to describe yourself in words first. These do not. Deep narrow attention is treated as the right way to work, not a thing to interrupt.

Instrument I · Studies 02, 06

On attachment and neurodivergence: this is design, not treatment. The practice borrows ideas about safety, co-regulation and attention to decide how a room is built and how a session is paced. It diagnoses nothing, treats nothing, and is not a substitute for care.

Six studies · in progress

Below thinking.

An artistic research trajectory in six new works. Each study tests one instrument against one of the two questions, through hand, sound or gathering.

Two questions: what happens to an image made below thinking, and what has to be true of the room before it can happen at all?

Interactive · the folded page

Play the exquisite corpse.

In 1925 the Surrealists folded paper so each player wrote without seeing what came before. The first sentence it gave them: the exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine. Here, the page plays with you.

  1. The page writes a line and folds it. You see only its last word.
  2. Write what comes next, fast, without thinking it through.
  3. Four folds, then unfold the whole sentence.

Nothing you type is stored or sent. It disappears when you leave the page.

Lineage

Seven doors below thinking.

References, not authorities. The first five found ways to let the unconscious speak through images. The last two are the body half: what a room has to be like before anyone can play in it. ThetaStateOfMind takes one idea from each.

Sigmund Freud

Dreams · 1900

In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud read dreams as disguised messages from the unconscious, built from images, condensations and displacements rather than logic.

The royal road to a knowledge of the unconsciousFreud, The Interpretation of Dreams, 1900, ch. VII
TSM takesThe dream image as material, not a puzzle to solve. Works are made like dreams are: by joining things that do not belong together.

Carl Jung

Active imagination · 1913–1916

Jung let inner images unfold while awake, then gave them form through painting, writing or carving. He described the method in The Transcendent Function (written 1916) and practised it in the Red Book.

TSM takesStaying with an image long enough for it to move. Painting and collage as a way to follow it, not to explain it.

André Breton

Automatism · Manifesto of Surrealism, 1924

Breton defined Surrealism as writing or making faster than the critical mind can interfere, and with friends invented games like the exquisite corpse.

Psychic automatism in its pure stateBreton, Manifesto of Surrealism, 1924
TSM takesSpeed and surrender. Intuitive collage and the looping line drawings are automatism with scissors and pen.

Salvador Dalí

Paranoiac-critical method · 1930s

Dalí trained himself to see double images, one form hiding inside another, and called the method a spontaneous way of irrational knowledge (The Conquest of the Irrational, 1935). He also napped holding a key, waking as it fell, to catch the images at sleep's edge.

TSM takesThe double image. In the collages a face becomes a landscape, an orb becomes a moon, a selfie becomes a mask.

Hypnagogia

The threshold of sleep · named 1848

Alfred Maury named the vivid images that appear while falling asleep. In 2021 a study in Science Advances found people who briefly entered this earliest sleep stage were more likely to find a hidden solution afterwards. Theta rhythms (about 4–8 Hz) are typical of this drowsy state.

Lacaux et al., Sleep onset is a creative sweet spot, Science Advances, 2021
TSM takesThe threshold as a place to work. Slow sound, breath and repetition invite that drifting state; the art is what you bring back.

D. W. Winnicott

Potential space · Playing and Reality, 1971

Winnicott, a paediatrician and analyst, argued that creativity happens in play, and that play needs a holding environment first: someone reliable enough nearby that you can stop guarding yourself. He called the area where it happens potential space, neither wholly inner nor wholly outer.

Winnicott, Playing and Reality, 1971
TSM takesBuild the room before the prompt. How people are greeted, how long the silence lasts, whether anyone is watching: these decide what gets made.

Monotropism

Attention in deep channels · 2005

Dinah Murray, Mike Lesser and Wenn Lawson described autistic attention as monotropic: pooled into a few deep channels rather than spread thin, so interruption costs far more than it does for others. The account came from autistic researchers writing about themselves.

Murray, Lesser & Lawson, Autism, 2005
TSM takesLong uninterrupted making, no round of introductions, no talking about the work until it is finished. Deep narrow attention is the working condition, not a problem to manage.

A note on science: brainwaves describe states, they do not prescribe them. Psychoanalysis is a tradition of ideas, not settled evidence, and it is borrowed here as an artist borrows. ThetaStateOfMind is art, not therapy or medical treatment, and makes no health claims.
